THE POWER OF PRAYER

THE POWER OF PRAYER

And it came to pass, that,
as he was praying in a certain place,
when he ceased, one of his disciples
said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray,
as John also taught his disciples.

Luke.11. 1

I would like to share something with you that caught my attention recently when I was re-reading Luke 11:1.

Jesus had 12 disciples but yet it was only one of them that asked Jesus to teach him how to pray.  Thousands of years later the same attitude and appetite for deeper spiritual insights, knowledge and spiritual information concerning God’s Word would appear  to persist!

There is much talk and sometimes even study on  prayer but how many of us have  earnestly asked God to teach us how to pray or even sought training in this area?  The passage above implies that those who follow Christ need teaching on prayer.  It is important for us to note that the Apostle John taught his disciples to pray, implying that prayer is not just something that is caught but taught!  Many of us learnt how to pray through observing those around us – ie – attending a prayer meeting or church service.  However it seems that there is far more to prayer – there must be if Luke 11:1 is valid!  The disciples spent three years with Jesus – they too observed Him praying. The passage of scripture suggests that they were unable to catch on just by observation!

Have you ever been discipled in prayer and what does your present prayer life look like?

Why did Jesus pray?

One way we can learn to pray is by looking at the prayer life of Jesus. Although the Gospels don’t provide a detailed biography of Christ, they do offer captivating glimpses into His prayer life. So, “Why did Jesus pray?” After all, if Jesus is God, why did Jesus need to pray?

According to The Word of God  there are are several reasons why Jesus prayed.
One such reason is - Jesus prayed as an example to his followers. This is an example we  should continue to practice and learn from, Jesus prayed for others, despite the rebuke of his own disciples (Matthew 19:13).
